Q: What is Taekwondo? How is it different from other martial arts? A: The origin of Taekwondo can be traced back about 2000 years to the country known today as Korea. Translated from Korean, Taekwondo means "foot, hand, the way". Today Taekwondo has developed into the world's most widely practiced martial art. Taekwondo emphasizes powerful, often high kicks and fast, dynamic techniques combined with control, discipline, and focus. Because Taekwondo is exciting both to practice and watch, it has received international recognition was a medal sport in the year 2000 Olympics. Q: Why does Taekwondo have to offer me? Taekwondo offers something to everyone - young, old, male, female, fit and unfit. Unlike many martial arts, Taekwondo emcompasses three faces: the "martial", concentrating on self-defense, the "art", analyzing the structure, form and beauty of the techniques, and the "sport", playing on strategy and style. Taekwondo students increase strength and coordination, improve cardio-vascular capacity, and learn something worthwhile. Q: What is the benefit of learning Self Defense? Everyone can benefit from self-defense. The speed of Taekwondo techniques creates power which is not dependent on size or strength. Kicking techniques utilize the strongest part of the body, the legs, which can be a crucial asset if use of the arms is ineffective. Most importantly Taekwondo teaches two essential qualities: self confidence and awareness. Q: What are the classes like? U.S. West Coast Taekwondo classes are conducted Monday through Friday, and are separated according to belt rank. Classes consist of self-defense training, sparring, forms (routines of movement), and physical conditioning. You will never be pushed into something you feel uncomfortable doing or something for which you are not ready (sparring for example). All classes are taught by experienced Black Belt instructors, and you will have a chance to advance in belts as your skills improve. Basically, you will learn a great martial art, make new friends, and have a lot of fun!!! Q: Is Taekwondo for me? Can I do it? Sure you can! No previous martial arts training is required. Students at U.S. West Coast Taekwondo range in age from 4 years to 70+ years. People join U.S. West Coast Taekwondo at any time, so there will always be someone of similar experience at U.S. West Coast Taekwondo. Q: How old does my child need to be to start Taekwondo? Children may start in the Tiny Tigers program as soon as age 4. The Tiny Tigers Program at U.S. Coast Taekwondo is designed specifically for children aged 4 through 7. Children 6 years and over may also attend the adult and/or family classes. See the Class Schedule page for class times. Q: What can Taekwondo do for my child? Taekwondo at U.S. West Coast offers a variety of benefits to children. In addition to gaining a sense of individual accomplishment, often lacking in team sports, children will improve their poise, self-confidence, and self-discipline. This will carry into their home life and school work. In addition, they learn to be "street smart", to think instead of panic in potentially serious situations as well as how to react to threats from other kids. Discipline and respect are taught by leadership and example, not by fear of force, making this a positive character building environment for children and teenagers. Q: How much do the Taekwondo classes cost? The Beginner's Special is $149.00, which includes a uniform, registration, membership in the United States Taekwondo Union, and one month of lessons. Typically 6 weeks of lessons is required to move from white to yellow belt. After the first month, monthly tuition is $99.00 for all ages, which includes 3 Taekwondo classes per week.
